Coastal Recycling is a recycling company based in Exeter with our own recycling facilities, energy production, composting and landfills across Devon. Motivated by our wish to prove that we really are as effective at recycling waste as we say we are, we were only too happy to apply for PAS 402. All our directors were persuaded to invest in it by customer recognition of PAS 402, particularly in the construction and demolition sector.
Richard Marsh, Coastal Recycling director, said: “This marks a key milestone for us. To lead the way as the first waste resource management organisation in the south of England to achieve this quality mark demonstrates our commitment to the environment. Recovering resources has been at the heart of our operations for some time and achieving PAS 402 is a fantastic external endorsement.”
To achieve the quality standard, Coastal Recycling published recycling and landfilling data from across the operation including collection, transport, recovery, treatment and disposal of waste as well as reporting evidence of material recovery rates.
In order to engage customers with PAS 402 and show off the benefits, we went on a national tour of waste management brokers with a new presentation all about waste service quality and transparent compliance. As we are certificated to management systems standards ISO:9001, ISO:14001 and OHSAS:18001 we explained how PAS 402 easily hooks onto our existing system and enhances it.
This was received extremely well by the brokers, one of whom already had contracts in place dictating that waste service providers are certificated to PAS 402. Customers in the education sector are delighted that our Green Compass accreditation gives them the reliable recycling statistics they need to better engage students in recycling, saving them money in the process. An excellent joined-up approach.
Because the standard is monitored to ensure that performance specifications continue to be met in the future, there is respect for the improvement of our recycling performance data at each site. Data that was previously dealt with as a requirement for the Environment Agency and HMRC is now of much broader interest, engaging everyone from the transfer station supervisors to the top management. This has led to discussions around further improvement for the data collection and investment in electronic systems that has an even wider benefit.
Benefits of Green Compass: Taryn Clements, Coastal Recycling’s Compliance Manager, said: “Achieving PAS 402 is a great step for Coastal and a recognisable seal of approval for customers. When choosing to work with Coastal Recycling, customers can be confident that their waste materials are managed according to strict standards and that they will have verifiable information for any waste management
